Webb Research Corporation receives Design and Construction Grant for Wind Turbine project

FALMOUTH, Mass., May 16, 2006 -- Webb Research Corporation (WRC) received notice from the Massachusetts Technology Collaborative’s (MTC’s) Renewable Energy Trust that it was awarded a $575,000 grant for the purpose of funding design and construction activities. The first phase focuses on design and permitting issues. A second phase of the grant will help to defray construction costs.

During 2005, WRC completed a feasibility study of the possibility of installing a wind turbine to generate electricity at their location on Technology Park Drive, in the Falmouth Technology Park. The study was lead by Boreal Renewable Energy, of Acton, MA.

MTC also provided funding for the WRC feasibility study, and similar studies for Falmouth Hospital and the town of Falmouth. MTC has also funded other local projects for Falmouth Public Schools, Upper Cape Cod Regional Technical School, and the Woods Hole Research Center. The WRC study confirmed that their proposed location offers favorable attributes: a good wind resource, remote location, high electricity costs, and nearby large commercial electrical loads. Wind measurements made at the Falmouth wastewater treatment plant, located about 0.7 miles from the Webb location, were used as part of the study.

WRC’s plan calls for the installation of single turbine with a rated capacity of 1.5 to 1.8 MW. By comparison, the turbine recently installed at Mass Maritime is rated 0.66 MW.
