April 18, 2006 - Governor Patrick announced yesterday that Evergreen Solar has chosen a site on the Massachusetts Technology Collaborative's campus for its $150 million expansion and new facility that will create up to 375 new jobs. Massachusetts beat out proposals from New York, Oregon, North Carolina, other states, and Mexico for the new facility.
Governor Patrick's announcement was made at Evergreen's current facility in Marlborough.
MTC's Renewable Energy Trust is providing a $10 million grant, $5 million loan and $500,000 grant for a solar installation on the new facility in Westborough. The agency will continue to help Evergreen throughout the development process and provide space in Westborough to help during the construction of the new facility. Evergreen Solar received a $2.5 million investment from the Trust in 2003. That investment helped Evergreen expand its production of solar panels at a critical time for the company.
This new investment sends a strong message to the clean energy industry across the country and throughout the world that the Trust, working in partnership with the Governor and his administration, is committed to helping companies thrive in Massachusetts.
Other partners in the Evergreen project include the Massachusetts Office of Business Development, the state's Workforce Training Fund, NSTAR, and Citizens Bank of Massachusetts.
