Project Overview:
The Town of Milton studied a number of high-performance green design options for its new Collicot-Cunningham Elementary School renovation and new construction project. The feasibility study grant provided by MTC helped them better understand the cost savings associated with various energy efficiency measures. The main areas covered by the study were energy efficiency lighting, HVAC systems, solar power, and fuel cells. During the design phase of funding the planners decided to transform two schools that share the same site but occupy two buildings into a single building that share a cafeteria, kitchen, media center, several specialty classrooms and a common energy source for heating, cooling and electrical needs. Milton maximized energy efficiency opportunities in this addition/renovation project and paid special attention to improving the schools’ indoor air quality. To emphasize the importance of renewable energy technologies, Milton is planning to install a 42 kW solar array on the roof of the school in its construction phase. Recognizing an opportunity to use the school as a teaching tool, Milton intends to implement an environmental and renewable energy curriculum component centered on instrumentation and monitoring of the school complex.
