MTIP Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

General

  • How does the program work?

The MassTech Intern Partnership Program provides matching grants to eligible tech companies to partially reimburse intern salaries. Companies and students are required to register on the TechGen portal to participate in the Program.  After a company recruits an intern, either through the TechGen portal or outside of the portal, the company must apply to the Program through the MassTech website. The Program accepts applications on a rolling basis until all funds are reserved. After MassTech confirms the company’s eligibility, the company will be required to sign an Intern Sponsorship Agreement. At the conclusion of the internship, participating companies can seek reimbursement according to Program guidelines.

  • What are the dates of the program?

MassTech will begin accepting applications on March 28, 2017. MassTech expects companies to employ summer interns between the months of May and September. All reimbursement requests must be submitted by October 31, 2017 according to the Program guidelines.

  • How many interns can my company hire through the program?

Companies participating in the Program are eligible to receive reimbursement for up to two interns per calendar year (January – December).

  • Who pays the interns?

Companies are responsible for employing and paying the intern(s) directly at rates agreed-upon by the company and intern. In order to be reimbursed by MassTech at the conclusion of the internship, companies must pay interns on a W-2 basis and submit required forms and payroll documentation. The forms and information about the required documentation will be provided with the Intern Sponsorship Agreement. MassTech will not reimburse companies that pay their interns as contractors who will receive 1099 forms.

  • May my company pay an intern as a contractor and receive reimbursement?

No, the Program reimbursement is only available to companies that pay interns on a W-2 basis and submit required forms and payroll documentation including proof of tax withholdings. MassTech will not reimburse companies that pay their interns as contractors who will receive 1099 forms.

  • What is the minimum hourly wage my company needs to pay the intern(s) to qualify for the program?

MassTech requires a minimum hourly wage of $12 per hour per intern to qualify for the reimbursement Program. Massachusetts minimum wage is $11 per hour effective January 1, 2017.

  • Is there a maximum hourly wage that my company can pay our intern(s)?

MassTech does not set a maximum hourly wage for Program participants, however MassTech will only reimburse 50% of the intern’s gross salary up to $8 per hour with a total reimbursement not to exceed $3,200. A company that pays $16 per hour will maximize the 50% matching funds at $8 per hour until the reimbursement limit is reached. If an intern is paid more than $16 per hour, the company will be responsible for 100% of the portion of the intern’s salary that exceeds $16 per hour.

              For example:

  1. An Intern earns $20 per hour. For one hour of work, MassTech will reimburse the company $8, and the company is responsible for the remaining $12. Once the $3,200 reimbursement limit is reached, the company is responsible for 100% of intern’s wages.
  2. An Intern earns $15 per hour. For one hour of work, MassTech will reimburse the company $7.50, and the company is responsible for the remaining $7.50. Once the $3,200 reimbursement limit is reached, the company is responsible for 100% of intern’s wages.
  • Do companies have to provide interns future employment at the end of their internships?

No, companies participating in the MassTech Intern Partnership are not obligated in any way to make an offer of future employment at the end of the internship experience.
