CPOE University: Training Physician Leaders
To Implement Computer Physician Order Entry Systems

Following the release of the Massachusetts Technology Collaborative/New England Healthcare Institute report, Saving Lives, Saving Money: The Imperative for Computerized Physician Order Entry in Massachusetts, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts announced that it will require the use of CPOE for hospitals to be eligible for its incentive plans after 2011 and the Massachusetts Legislature will require all hospitals to have CPOE by 2012 as a condition of licensure. This has resulted in a greater need for implementation support services for physician leaders. Following an extensive information-gathering process to determine the needs and concerns of physicians regarding the new systems, the Massachusetts Hospital CPOE Initiative is pleased to announce the opening of CPOE University.

In this educational series, our primary goal is to understand the needs of physician leadership and then provide tailored educational programs as well as guidance to encourage the participation and collaboration of medical staff, which is crucial to the success of these projects. Dan Morgenstern, MD, MBA, Consulting Physician Director for the Northeast U.S. at Computer Science Corporation will facilitate the series. The concept of the program was reviewed and endorsed by the Massachusetts Hospital CPOE Initiative, which is constituted by the Massachusetts Technology Collaborative, New England Healthcare Institute, Massachusetts Hospital Association, Massachusetts Medical Society and other stakeholders.

First Semester of CPOE University:
CPOE University is designed to provide a combination of seminars, courses and roundtables. The program will host its first seminar on October 21, 2008 at the Massachusetts Medical Society in Waltham, MA. Each offering will be held three times. We have chosen Waltham, Lakeville/New Bedford, and Holyoke as our venues. We want to allow for maximum participation by hosting each session in a geographic area that is easily accessible. The first semester will end on December 19, 2008. Classes are intended to be small and advance registration will be required. There is no charge for attending these programs, however, you must preregister.
