What is CPOE University?

CPOE University is a physician focused educational program consisting of five Seminars, and two full day courses.  The primary goal is to take the needs of physician leadership and translate them into a tailored educational program that provides guidance to encourage the participation and collaboration of medical staffs, which is crucial for the success of these projects. The use of CPOE will be required by 2011 for participation in BCBSMA’s incentive program and the State legislature will require CPOE by 2012 as a condition of licensure. This imperative has created the need to develop dynamic learning and the Massachusetts Hospital CPOE Initiative is pleased to provide these programs at no charge to physicians throughout the Commonwealth.

Dan Morgenstern, MD, MBA, Principal in the Clinical IT Consulting Group, and a member of the Clinical Excellence Team for the Northeast U.S. at CSC will facilitate the series, the concept of has been reviewed and endorsed by the Massachusetts Hospital Association, the Massachusetts Medical Society and other key stakeholders.   CSC has amalgamated and synthesized the concerns voiced by physicians, as well as their suggestions and requests for educational material into what is now referred to as CPOE University.

Why should I attend?
For a CPOE project to be successful it must have the significant buy in of physicians and also have strong physician leadership.  Therefore we have designed Semester 1 specifically for physicians.  Non-physician courses will be offered in the future.

Where will it be offered?
To allow for maximum participation, each session will be in a geographic area that is easily accessible and each offering will be held three times. We have chosen Waltham, Lakeville/New Bedford and Holyoke as our venues.

What are the dates?
First semester begins on October 21, 2008 and ends on December 19, 2008.

Do I need to register?
Classes are intended to be small and advance registration is required. There is no charge for attending these programs, however, you must pre-register.

About the CPOE Initiative

NEW: Read the newly released report Saving Lives, Saving Money: The Imperative for Computerized Physician Assisted Order Entry Adoption in Massachusetts Hospitals (February 2008)

The goal of the Massachusetts Hospital CPOE Initiative is to improve patient safety and quality, and to lower costs in the state’s healthcare system. Its objective is to achieve full implementation of Computerized Physician Order Entry (CPOE) systems in all acute care hospitals in the state within four years.

We provide regular updates, publish valuable reports on CPOE, hold annual conferences, and provide the latest resources. All available here at this site.

Started in 2005, the Massachusetts Hospital CPOE Initiative is a collaborative effort supported by the Massachusetts Technology Collaborative (MTC), the New England Healthcare Institute (NEHI), the Massachusetts Hospital Association (MHA), and the Massachusetts Council of Community Hospitals (MCCH).

The first phase of the initiative resulted in the release of the:

These studies have subsequently been rolled into more complete reports: Lessons Learned (October 2006) and a Case Study (December 2006).

Thirteen hospitals were found to be “most ready” based on the initial assessment and two-day site visits that were conducted. The hospitals from the pilot group will work closely with the CPOE Initiative to develop the benefits, performance, funding, and payment phases of the project.

All other hospitals will continue advancing toward CPOE implementation working on key project elements identified in the customized roadmap supplied by the CPOE Initiative.

The second phase of the Initiative aims:
