Boston –On June 3rd, a group of nine distinguished scientists from across the state convened in Boston to serve as the first reviewers for what was organized as an NIH-styled peer review process that reviewed and scored the first matching grant proposals submitted to the Massachusetts Life Sciences Center (MLSC).

Massachusetts Broadband Institute launched, with $40 million to bring broadband to all unserved communities

GOSHEN – The hand-made signs held by the children in front of the Town Hall told the story: “Happy Birthday, Gov. Patrick. Go Broadband.” “Thank you Gov. Patrick. Broadband = Finished Homework, from Aaron and Sam.” And “Kids Need Love, Safety + Broadband.”

Almost a year to the day that Gov. Deval Patrick announced his plan to launch a Massachusetts Broadband Institute, he traveled to Goshen to sign the law creating the new $40 million initiative in poignant fashion.
As the crowd of more than 100 well-wishers serenaded Gov. Patrick with “Happy Birthday,” the Governor signed the bill into law.

It was, according to State Sen. Stan Rosenberg (D-Amherst), the first time in history a sitting governor in Massachusetts had officially visited Goshen, a hill-town community west of Northampton along Route 9.

The Innovation Institute’s matching investments in interdisciplinary, collaborative research centers support the Commonwealth’s knowledge economy. In 2005, the Innovation Institute’s investments have leveraged $35 million in new federal research dollars for Massachusetts.

Choosing the right path for regional economic development

BOSTON – Fitchburg Mayor Lisa Wong, one of four presenters scheduled to discuss regional economic development strategies in Massachusetts, apologized for being late. The Innovation Institute is working with the University of Massachusetts, Dartmouth, the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, and other local and regional stakeholders in industry, government, and academia to fashion a collaborative approach to future research and investment in the nascent Marine Science and Technology Industry.
