Lawrence J. Reilly
On February 14, 2011, Central Vermont appointed Lawrence J. Reilly as Chief Executive Officer and President, effective March 1, 2011. Since July 2008, Mr. Reilly has provided energy consulting services independently. He has assisted utilities and regulators in the nation of Jordan under a contract funded by the U.S. Agency for International Development, served as an advisor to GroundedPower, Inc., a startup smart grid company; and consulted for NuGen Capital Management LLC.
Prior to this, he was a Director, Senior Vice President, and General Counsel of National Grid USA. National Grid USA was known as New England Electric System, or NEES, prior to its acquisition in March 2000 by National Grid Group of London, England. In addition to serving as National Grid USA's chief legal officer, Mr. Reilly is responsible for regulatory research, federal affairs, and corporate security. National Grid USA is primarily engaged in the business of transmitting and distributing electricity and natural gas. Through its subsidiaries, National Grid USA provides electric distribution service to 3.8 million electric and gas customers in New York, Massachusetts, Rhode Island and New Hampshire.
Mr. Reilly joined National Grid in 1982 as a corporate attorney. Between 1982 and 1987, he advised various subsidiaries in the areas of finance and securities law as well as environmental licensing and permitting for the Hydro-Quebec Phase II transmission project. Between 1987 and 1990, Mr. Reilly was counsel to National Grid's Rhode Island subsidiary. In that capacity he was responsible for regulatory proceedings at the Rhode Island Public Utilities Commission and legal matters relating to licensing and permitting for the Manchester Street Station Repowering Project.
In 1990, Mr. Reilly became Director of Rates and assumed responsibility for wholesale and retail rate matters at the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission and Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and New Hampshire state regulatory commissions. In 1993 he became a Vice President and assumed additional responsibility for retail revenue requirements.
Between 1996 and 2001, Mr. Reilly served as President and Chief Executive Officer of National Grid's four distribution companies and head of National Grid's Distribution Business Unit. Mr. Reilly assumed his current position
effective January 1, 2001.
Mr. Reilly received his Bachelor of Arts degree magna cum laude from the State University of New York at Albany in 1978. In 1982 he received a Master in City and Regional Planning degree from the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University where he specialized in energy and environmental policy issues. Also in 1982 he received a Juris Doctor degree cum laude from Boston University School of Law.
Mr. Reilly is Chairman Emeritus of the Massachusetts Alliance for Economic Development. He currently serves on a number of boards and organizations focusing on economic development and related public policy issues including: the Massachusetts Technology Park Corporation, the Rhode Island Economic Policy Council, and the Rhode Island Growth Planning Council. He is also a Director of the New England Legal Foundation, the Foundation for Ocean State Public Radio, and the Rhode Island Philharmonic Orchestra.
